Excerpt / Summary :
A tamper-proof national work identification card, potentially with biometric information, is being proposed by New York Democratic Senator Charles (Chuck) Schumer and South Carolina Republican Senator Lindsey Graham as part of their join immigration reform legislation. Chris Calabrese, of the ACLU Legislative Counsel, voiced his concern: “We’re talking about fingerprinting every single American worker, and that card, in turn, will be used probably not just to work but also to travel, to vote, perhaps even to own a gun. If you just look at the way the social security number has expanded over the years, I’m sure there will be a lot of uses for this card.”
